Algonac Water Filtration Plant
– Formerly Algonac “Water Works”
The Original Water Works plant was constructed
in 1938-1939 on its present location and provided a
much needed supply of safe water to the small population
in Algonac. There was not public water supply prior
to that. We obtain our water supply from the St. Clair
River now, as we always have since the original construction.
It was sometime in the late 1940’s early 1950’s
when Clay Township became a customer, and we then started
providing a good supply of water to the Township, as
well as the City of Algonac.
Throughout the years, as the population
has grown in both the City of Algonac and Township of
Clay, we have had to increase the capacity of the filtration
plant as demanded by population. We expanded in the
1950’s, the 1960’s, and lastly in 1999 to
accommodate the needs of the communities, to bring our
capacity of production to almost 3 million gallons per
day.
We have on staff, four licensed operators,
including the supervisor, and our business office hours
are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. However,
we are staffed many more hours of the day, seven days
a week, and 365 days per year. We are located at 1530
St. Clair River Drive in Algonac, and can be reached
at 810-794-3281.
We offer pre-arrange tours to many different
organizations (Schools, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, etc.)
and are handicapped accessible.
